Background on Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes are responsible for breaking down
dietary compounds such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats into
simpler components in order for the body to absorb the important
nutrients more easily. Therefore, it is crucial for the body to
produce sufficient amounts of these enzymes for efficient digestion.
Why? This is to ensure that the nutrients from the food eaten is
absorbed by the body and will not go to waste. Because when food is
not properly digested and the body does not receive a good amount of
nutrients, the body will crave for more food. This could either
result to weight gain or a number of digestive problems.
Digestive enzymes are produced within the digestive
system, otherwise known as the gastrointestinal tract or G.I. Tract.
Meaning, digestive enzymes are present in the mouth, stomach,
pancreas, and in the small intestine. The process of digestion
begins in the mouth with the joined efforts of the saliva and
mastication. Then, the chewed food travels down the esophagus to the
stomach. Here, the digestion continues with the presence of a
variety of digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid.
Aside from the gastric amylase and lipase, pepsin,
and gelatinase already present in the stomach, the pancreas also
releases a variety of enzymes which include steapsin, trypsin,
chymotrypsin, elastase, pancreatic amylase, nuclease, and
carboxypeptidase into the stomach to help with the digestion. And as
it food, further moves down the small intestine, enzymes such as
lipase, maltase, isomaltase, lactase, and sucrase along with the
pancreatic enzyme takes over an facilitate in the absorption of
nutrients.
Yet, there are still enzymes which are needed to
break down plant cell walls such as pectin as well as fiber. These
are obtained through eating raw fruits and vegetables or taking
supplements. Enzymes are critical for the health of one's digestive
system. In fact, digestive enzymes are critical for one's overall
health.
A number of diseases can be attributed to
insufficient digestion and absorption of nutrients. With the lack of
nutrients, a number of diseases can develop alongside the weakening
of the immune system. That is why eating raw fruits and vegetables
and taking supplemental enzymes can truly be beneficial.
But aside from sticking to a healthy diet, one must
also develop a healthy eating habit. Eating slower and chewing food
well is top on the list. By eating slowly and chewing food well,
there is more time provided for digestion. Also, stop eating once
you are full. Gluttony should not be tolerated.
Also, one should get used to eating in smaller
amounts, eating several small meals a day. This way, one is not
depriving himself of food, yet you he is not overeating. And last
but not the least, drink a sufficient amount of water.
