Do you know
how your body is able to absorb nutrients from food? The answer is
enzymes. Our body is just filled with enzymes. In fact, all living
organisms are composed of enzymes. Enzymes are essentially the ones
responsible for providing life to an organism. They are involved in
the composition and functioning of every system, organs, and cells
in an organism.
Every
enzyme has a specific task to perform, and collectively they make up
the complex mechanism of existence. There are thousands of
identified enzymes that are within the human body. There are those
that the body is able to naturally produce. Yet, there are those
that are not naturally produced in the body but are essential none
the less. Thus, these enzymes, commonly known as essential enzymes,
need to be introduced into the body.
Here, let
me discuss the type of enzymes that are essential in converting
dietary particles into absorbable nutrients. These enzymes are
generally called digestive enzymes and are present in the mouth,
particularly in the saliva, in the pancreas and in other organs
along the digestive tract.
Basically,
enzymes are organic protein molecules. And as mentioned earlier,
each enzyme is assigned with a specific task. Thus, digestive
enzymes are practically responsible for breaking down dietary
nutrients in order to be easily absorbed by the body. And since,
there are also various types of nutrients that need to be broken
down such as protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and lipids. Thus, there
are actually eight digestive enzymes that are deemed necessary to
optimize one's overall health and well-being.
Protease is
the enzyme responsible for digesting fibrin and dietary proteins.
Proteins are not easily broken down. Sometimes, when protein
particles are not completely digested, these particles can end up in
the circulatory system as well as in other parts of the body which
can be harmful to your health. What protease does is that it removes
the protein particles that have strayed, cleaning the bloodstream
and restoring balance and energy in the body.
Amylase is
believed to be the second most important digestive enzyme. It is
responsible for breaking down carbohydrates to be used as fuel by
the body. The digestive enzyme amylase can also act as an
antihistamine. How? Allergies, blood sugar imbalances, and asthma
can be traced to the incomplete digestion of carbohydrates. Thus,
with sufficient supply of amylase, these conditions can be avoided.
Lipase, on
the other hand, is responsible for breaking down dietary fats or
lipids to be used as body fuel. Excess fatty deposits in the veins
and arteries can cause clogging, resulting to a rise in blood
pressure leading to a number of heart diseases. And when this
digestive enzyme is taken in higher quantities, this can end up in
the blood stream, clearing away the fatty deposits in the vein and
arteries.
Cellulase
is the digestive enzyme responsible for breaking down cellulose
fiber in foods. It also acts as antioxidant for it can bind heavy
metal and other toxins and take them out of the body. This type of
enzyme is not naturally produced by the body and must therefore be
acquired through food and supplements.
Maltase is
the digestive enzyme responsible for breaking down starch or complex
sugar found in malt and grain products and turning it into glucose
to be used as body fuel.
Lactase is
the digestive enzyme responsible for breaking down milk sugar found
in dairy products. People who have deficiency of this enzyme are
often lactose intolerant.
Sucrase is
the digestive enzyme responsible for breaking down sugars that are
present in most foods.
Phytase is
the digestive enzyme that generally helps with digestion. It can
break down the indigestible phytic acid found in grains and oil
seeds, producing digestible B-Complex, calcium, phosphorous, and
other nutrients.
