There are three main types of digestive enzymes: protein-eating enzymes (proteases or proteolytic enzymes); carbohydrate-eating enzymes (amylases); and fat-eating enzymes (lipases). A balanced enzyme formula will typically contain all three. But you can buy them separately; and, as you’ll see in a moment, sometimes there’s good reason to do that.
Within each of the big three categories you’ll find MANY different kinds of enzymes. For example, bromelain (from pineapple) and papain (from papaya) are both protein-eating enzymes or proteases. They’re very common and are in a great many enzyme supplements. They’re safe and have been used by hundreds of thousands of people for years.
Bromelain and papain are an excellent way to start on enzymes. As proteases, they belong to the most important and beneficial enzyme category for all-around good health. They’re even common in meat tenderizers, because they break down protein.
