Lupus or systemic lupus erythematosus is another autoimmune disease, much like rheumatoid arthritis. However, this disease is more common among women than in men and usually reaches its peak after puberty. The exact cause of lupus is unknown. However, many researchers surmise that the female estrogen hormone may be a factor that triggers the condition since most of the patients are women in their childbearing age. Aside from estrogen, researchers also believe that major stress and infections can actuate the disease. Others conclude that the disease is likely to be hereditary since 10% percent of the people with lupus have a family member suffering the same condition. Thus, the disease may be hereditary. Another factor can be ethnicity since the majority of lupus patients are Hispanic Caucasian women.
People with lupus are usually given medical drugs such as NSAIDS and corticosteroids. However, long time use of these drugs has lethal side effects. Thus, studies have been made using enzymes as treatment. The results proved to be positive since the inflammation caused by the abnormal autoimmune response lessened more quickly compared to when drugs were used. Moreover, the test using enzymes for treatment showed no side effects whatsoever.
